Zakat on Gold: How to Calculate What You Owe

Gold is one of the most common forms of wealth Muslims hold — and it is also zakatable. If you own gold above the nisab threshold and have held it for a lunar year, Zakat is due. This guide explains exactly how to calculate Zakat on gold.

Is Zakat Due on Gold?

Yes. Gold is a form of wealth on which Zakat is obligatory, whether held as coins, bars, or jewellery. If the value of your gold (alone or combined with your other wealth) exceeds the nisab and a full lunar year passes, you must pay Zakat on it.

The Gold Nisab

The nisab for gold is 87.48 grams (approximately 7.5 tolas). If the gold you own meets or exceeds this weight — or its market value combined with your cash and other assets exceeds the equivalent value — Zakat becomes due.

How to Calculate Zakat on Gold

  1. Weigh your gold in grams.
  2. Find the current market price of gold per gram on the day you calculate.
  3. Multiply the weight by the price to get the total value.
  4. Pay 2.5% of that value as Zakat.

Example: If you own 100g of gold and the market price is £60 per gram, the total value is £6,000. Your Zakat would be £6,000 × 2.5% = £150.

What About Gold Jewellery You Wear?

Scholars differ on this point. According to the Hanafi school, Zakat is due on all gold jewellery, even if worn regularly. Some other schools hold that jewellery in regular personal use is exempt. If you are unsure which view to follow, consult a qualified scholar — and remember that giving is always rewarded.

Pay Your Gold Zakat Through Hayat Charity

Hayat Charity (Reg. No. 1212073) distributes your Zakat to eligible recipients in accordance with Islamic principles. Calculate what you owe and give with confidence.
